Developmental Age Calculator
Understand developmental age โ a concept in paediatrics and developmental psychology that describes where a child's skills fall compared to typical age-based milestones. This tool is a parent-facing educational resource. Clinical developmental assessment requires a trained specialist.
What is developmental age?
Developmental age is the age at which a child's skills in a specific domain (language, motor skills, social/emotional, cognitive) are typically observed in the general population. A 4-year-old who speaks with the vocabulary and grammar of a typical 2.5-year-old has a language developmental age of approximately 2.5.
Importantly, developmental age is domain-specific โ a child may have a speech developmental age of 2 years but fine motor skills at the 5-year level. This is why "developmental age" is always used in context of a specific skill domain, not as a single global number.
CDC developmental milestones (selected)
The following table shows selected milestones from the CDC's "Developmental Milestones" resource (updated 2022). These are skills most children achieve by each age โ not a complete list, not a diagnostic checklist.
| Age | Language / Communication | Movement / Physical | Social / Emotional |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 months | Coos, makes gurgling sounds | Holds head up briefly | Calms when picked up |
| 4 months | Makes sounds back when talked to | Holds head steady unsupported | Smiles on own to get attention |
| 6 months | Takes turns making sounds | Rolls from tummy to back | Recognises familiar people |
| 9 months | Makes different sounds (ba, da, ma) | Sits without support | Shy around strangers |
| 12 months | Waves bye-bye; says "mama/dada" | Pulls to standing position | Hands you a book to read |
| 18 months | Says at least 3 words besides mama/dada | Walks without support | Moves away from caregiver but checks back |
| 2 years | Uses 2-word phrases; points to named picture | Kicks a ball | Notices when others are hurt/upset |
| 3 years | Talks in conversation; asks "what" and "who" | Strings beads; uses fork | Calms down within 10 min after separation |
| 4 years | Says sentences of 4+ words; sings songs | Catches large ball most of the time | Pretends to be something else during play |
| 5 years | Tells a story from a book with pictures | Buttons some buttons; hops on one foot | Avoids danger (hot stoves, deep water) |
