What this does and doesn't tell you

Biological age estimates from lifestyle questionnaires have a meaningful correlation with health outcomes in large population studies, but they come with important caveats:

  • It's an estimate, not a measurement. True biological age testing (epigenetic clocks, telomere assays) requires lab work. This calculator uses population-level risk factors as a proxy.
  • Individual variation is large. Two people with identical questionnaire answers can have meaningfully different biological ages due to genetics, gut microbiome, and factors not captured here.
  • Direction matters more than precision. If your result is significantly higher than your chronological age, that's a signal to examine the lifestyle factors flagged — not a number to treat as exact.
  • Short-term changes matter. The factors this calculator uses (activity, sleep, smoking) are modifiable. Studies show biological age markers can improve within months of lifestyle changes.

How it's calculated

The calculator starts with your chronological age and applies adjustments based on published relative risk data. Each factor below has a cited source:

FAQ

Biological age is an estimate of how 'old' your body's cells and systems appear to be, based on measurable lifestyle and health factors — as opposed to chronological age, which simply counts the years since your birth. A 50-year-old with an active lifestyle and good sleep may have a biological age closer to 42; a sedentary smoker of the same age might measure closer to 58.
The modifiable factors this calculator uses — physical activity, sleep, and smoking — are all changeable. Research on epigenetic age (a more direct cellular measure) shows biological age markers can improve within weeks to months of consistent lifestyle changes, particularly increased physical activity and smoking cessation.
Diet is an important biological aging factor, but it's the hardest to capture accurately in a short questionnaire. Self-reported dietary patterns have notoriously high variability. Including an oversimplified diet score would give a false sense of precision. Future updates may include a validated dietary pattern score (e.g., Mediterranean diet adherence) with appropriate caveats.
