The AAHA feline life stage model
The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) define six life stages for cats, each with different developmental, physiological, and medical characteristics. This replaces the outdated "multiply by 7" method, which assumes linear aging — cats don't age linearly.
How the conversion is calculated

A 1-year-old cat ≈ 15 human years (rapid early development: first 6 months ≈ 10 human years).

A 2-year-old cat ≈ 24 human years (year 2 ≈ 9 additional human years).

Each year after age 2 ≈ 4 human years (slower, steady aging thereafter).

A 10-year-old cat ≈ 24 + (8 × 4) = 56 human years.

Yes. Indoor cats live significantly longer — average 12–18 years versus 2–5 years for outdoor cats (due to cars, predators, and disease exposure). The AAHA model is calibrated for indoor/well-cared-for cats. Outdoor cats' biological aging rate may be accelerated by chronic stress and environmental hazards.
In their first year, kittens go through what takes humans ~15 years: they're born helpless, develop senses, wean, become sexually mature, and reach full social independence. The biological development rate is compressed, which is why a 1-year-old cat is essentially a human teenager — not a 7-year-old child.
