Why the mean and median differ so dramatically
Wealth in the US is highly concentrated. The top 10% of households by wealth hold more than two-thirds of total US household wealth (Federal Reserve DFA data, 2023). This concentration pulls the mean (average) far above the median (the midpoint of all households). The median net worth is generally more meaningful for most people when comparing where they stand.
